What is an RTA & Why It Matters
In the mutual fund ecosystem, when you invest in a scheme offered by an AMC, the day-to-day administrative work — unit issuance, redemption processing, change of address/bank, statements, nominations, investor servicing — is handled by the Registrar and Transfer Agent (RTA) nominated by the AMC.
For investors and distributors, knowing which RTA handles your folio matters because:
- It helps you know where to go for servicing/changes.
- It gives insight into how smoothly changes and redemptions may get processed.
- From a distributor’s perspective, helps streamline operations, give correct instructions to clients, and manage expectations.
While this post focuses on the AMCs (rather than mapping them to specific RTAs), having the full list of AMCs is foundational.

Role of the Registrar & Transfer Agent (RTA)
Here are the key functions and why RTAs matter:
- RTAs maintain the folio records of investors in mutual fund schemes: how many units each investor holds, in which scheme, transaction history, redemptions, etc.
- They process applications: new purchases, switches, redemptions, change of bank mandate, change of address, nomination, etc. Without a good RTA process, investor servicing could become slow or error-prone.
- They act as interface between the AMC and the investor (and/or distributor). For example, investor correspondence, statements, handling investor grievances.
- They ensure regulatory compliance: e.g., ensuring nomination rights are fulfilled, KYC/record updates, linking to platforms like CAN (Common Account Number) etc.
- From a distributor’s or AMC’s point of view, good RTA operations help reduce turnaround time, improve investor satisfaction, and reduce operational risk.
Why this matters: For an investor, if you know which RTA your scheme’s folios are handled by, you’ll know where to direct a service request, or which website/app to use for tracking. For a distributor/advisor, knowing the RTA helps you know which service-centre, which slip/form to upload, which portal to use for SIP mandates or changes.
Key Details for Investors & Distributors
For Investors
- Always check that the AMC you are investing in shows in the above list (or is listed on the AMC/AMFI website) to ensure regulatory status.
- Keep your folio information updated (bank account, nominee, address), because servicing is handled by the RTA they appoint.
- Use the AMC or RTA portal to track your holdings, statements, and any changes you make.
- If you want to change bank mandate, switch scheme, redeem units, or update nomination, knowing which AMC you invested with simplifies the process.
- Be aware of any announcements of AMC mergers, scheme closures, or RTA changes.
For Distributors / Advisors
- Maintain a spreadsheet of your clients’ folios with the AMC name, scheme name, folio number, RTA (if known).
- Educate clients about servicing: which AMC (and hence RTA) handles their funds, what portal/forms to use.
- Set realistic turnaround-time expectations based on the AMC’s servicing track record (including the RTA’s efficiency).
- For onboarding, check that the AMC is in the latest AMFI list (to confirm registration).
- Use AMC websites and AMFI’s website for latest updates (e.g., new AMCs, scheme launches, regulatory changes).
Operational / Compliance Notes
- Every AMC must be registered with Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and must comply with regulations (e.g., minimum net‐worth, disclosure requirements).
- All AMCs are members of AMFI. According to Wikipedia, “as of 2025 there are 49 asset management companies that are registered with AMFI.”
- For your distributor platform, keeping an updated list of AMCs (with contact info, website, investor service numbers) is useful for operations, onboarding, servicing, and cross‐checking.
- With digital initiatives (for example, common account number portals), RTAs and AMCs are increasingly important behind the scenes—so operational reliability is as important as investment performance.
